STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
This term in photography we are learning about street photography , this involves going out on the street and openly or secretly taking photos of people.
In class we watched the film "Everybody street", after watching the film you can learn that photographers behave like their photos make them immortal. They also carry their cameras everywhere they go so they don't miss a generally unseen but important moment. The film is about street photographers from New York. The photographers mainly use Lika cameras because of their small size and quality, the photographers in the film are Joel Meyerowitz, Boogie, Elliot Erwitt, Jill Freedman and Bruce Davidson. The subjects that interest the men and women are violence, drugs and every day life. My favourite segment of the film was when Boogie spent time with gangs, junkies and fairly poor people, it was interesting for me because he could of easily been killed just to get a photo, it shows how committed they are. Death is one of the major risks when taking street photos. All the members of the film mentioned that photographing the street was unique because you never know what you will see or what will happen, they also mention that they take photos so they can capture a moment that will never happen again this adds to their love of the New York chaos. One of the photographs said every photo has to say only in New York. This means every photo has to tell the audience that this can only happen in New York, you wouldn't see this moment anywhere. The film is very inspiring because it shows people life work, you wouldn't hear of artists like Boogie everyday, his work is incredibly dangerous and is fairly unheard off. The artists featured love to read the culture of the city, one of the photographers woke up every morning to take photos of the Graffiti subway train, this was very important as the train has now been cleaned, this shows that you should always take photos of what you love because one day it will be gone. I would recommend this film to any budding young photographer as it shows the lows and the highs of lows of the job. Some of the artists worked on magazines and some worked with musicians but they are all brought together by the love of street photography. Here are some photos I took on the street they were defiantly inspired by the film. |

Ways of Seeing
The ways of seeing challenge involves looking at pictures differently. Here are the photos that we looked at together.
Here are the photos we took in school at lesson cross over time. This was our time taking "Street" photographs in school, the outcome varies, some photos are good and some are bad. For example the photo on the left is bad and the photo on the right is good. The thing I like about the photo on the right is its positioning. I like the positioning because it is a white background with a black object in the middle.

EBI: We could of taken the photos in closer detail, for example the picture of the girls shoes, that could of been made better by obscuring her body more. That is an all round target for me and the partners I work with.
This is my favourite street photo. It is by the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The picture is of a boy leaving a shop holding two bottles of wine. The picture is my favourite because it shows humour, it has also has gathered lots of attention because of its internet memes. The photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson is a well rewound french photographer. He has taken photos of Gandhi and other world famous leader.
The photo is shot in a certain way that suggests the photographer was taken by shock, it is slightly tilted which gives it a nice effect. The young girl's in the back add the humour to the picture. |
Bruce Gilden
Here is my groups Bruce Gilden inspired photos. We looked at a lot of Bruce Gildens work, we used old camera with a slow sync flash, thats why some of the pictures have a ghost like edge, all of the photos are unique.
Here are the best photos in black and white, Bruce Gilden's work is mainly in black and white.
These photos are the best from the batch in my opinion because the Slow Sync flash has visibly worked, I also really like the layout that they ended up in.
My favourite picture is the picture in the top left corner because the technique has worked and the facial expression is brilliant. |
WWW: I really like this picture because the black and white gives the picture a ghostly effect.
EBI: The problem with the picture is that it is slightly pixelated.

Diagonals
Here are the photos I took that had a diagonal theme.
street photos
Here are my 33 photos that I took over the half term holiday, I went to Oxford Street and Soho to take them. Iam still gaining confidence when taking photos of people in public. The photos are either people from behind or from a long way away.
Here are some photos that I took that involve re-appearing traits on a street, I took photos of cars that are down my road. What shocked me whilst taking the photos was the coulours were very repeated. There is only one Red, one Blue and the rest Black and Silver.
Controlled ASSESSMENT and PREP
For my end of year 9 photography controlled assessment I want to make a collection of black and white images that I have taken over the Street photography unit.
All of the photos will be the same size on the card that I will lay them out on.
Here are the three photos that I am using, they are from the Diagonals photo challenge.

I feel that the photos show a lot of what I have learnt in Street Photography. The layout of the pictures is good because it has the figure in the middle and the two faces on the right and left sides. All of the photos were taken on the same day and were inspired by the diagonals theme.
